How to Prepare Your Child for Their First Dance Class
Starting dance is an exciting milestone, and we want your child's first class at McDonald-Wilson Dance Academy (MWDA) to be a positive, fun experience. Here’s everything you need to know to help prepare your child for their first dance class and ensure they feel confident and ready to move!
1. What to Wear to Dance Class
At MWDA, we have Dress and Grooming Requirements (sent to you at registration time) to ensure that all dancers are comfortable and properly prepared for class. While we want every child to feel confident, our dress code helps maintain consistency and allows instructors to give the best guidance. Here’s what to expect:
Leotard and Tights
Dance Shoes
Hair: For ballet and other dance forms, we ask that hair be pulled back neatly in a bun, ponytail, or braid, to ensure it's out of their face and doesn’t interfere with their movements.
If you’re unsure about specific items, feel free to reach out to us! We also offer guidance on where to purchase dancewear, and we are happy to help with any questions.
2. What to Bring to Dance Class
Your child will be ready for class with the following essentials:
Water Bottle: Hydration is key during class!
Dance Bag: A small bag to store shoes, tights, and other personal items.
Positive Attitude: Remind your child to have fun and enjoy their time in class!
3. What to Expect During Your First Dance Class
We want every first-time dancer to feel excited and welcomed! Here’s what your child can expect during their first dance class at MWDA:
Warm Welcome: Our teachers and staff are here to make your child feel comfortable and at ease as they walk into the studio.
Introductory Activities: For younger dancers, we start with fun, age-appropriate exercises that focus on building basic skills like balance, coordination, and rhythm.
Gentle Guidance: Our instructors will provide clear, encouraging instruction, ensuring the experience is light-hearted and enjoyable.
Inclusive Environment: At MWDA, we pride ourselves on creating a supportive, positive atmosphere where every child can thrive.
4. First Dance Class Tips for Parents
Stay Positive: Encourage your child to have fun and try their best, emphasizing that it’s okay to feel a little nervous at first.
Arrive Early: Aim to arrive 5-10 minutes early so your child can get settled in, meet their teacher, and be ready to start class.
Stay Nearby: For younger children, it can help to stay close until they feel more comfortable. We offer observation days for parents to watch the class, though we encourage independence as they become more confident.
