Preschool Dance - For Ages 3 to 5 years

(Creative Movement and Basic Pre-Ballet)

These special classes for preschool children develop a broad range of movement skills and enhance coordination, flexibility and rhythm. The class work, designed specifically for this age group, leads children naturally into the study of ballet and other dance forms. This is a fun experience for all children.

Ballet - For Ages 6 and up

The structure and discipline of ballet classes allow young students to develop the balance, poise, flexibility and strength necessary not only for ballet but for all dance forms. McDonald-Wilson Dance Academy enhances student education through the highly respected Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) examinations paired with our own assessment examinations. The RAD Society is one of the largest and most influential dance education and training organizations in the world with more than 13,000 members spread across 79 countries. The RAD patron is HM Queen Elizabeth II. The examination syllabus is taught to more than a quarter of a million students around the globe.

RAD is one of the most widely used classical ballet syllabi in professional academies and college dance programs throughout Canada and the United States.  Participation in the RAD Exam system is possible only through officially registered and certified RAD teachers and schools. MWDA assesses its students yearly to ensure optimal progress and preparation for the exams as well as advancement to higher levels of training.

Jazz - For Ages 5 and up - Adults

High energy classes set to popular music offer children, teens and adults an exciting way to enjoy the benefits of dance training. Jazz students are encouraged to augment their training with a weekly ballet class.

Tap - For Ages 5 and up

One of the most popular dance forms of all times, tap classes are terrific for developing co-ordination and rhythm. Tap students are encouraged to augment their training with a weekly ballet class.

Modern - For Ages 5 and up

Modern dance includes two areas of movement, creative dance and modern dance technique.

There are various contemporary styles and techniques which have been developed since the beginning of the 20th century. The identifying aspects of modern dance include… use of torso, use of space, use of weight as in (fall/suspension) and the use of parallel legs, as well as turnout, all done in barefeet! Flexibility and strength are developed through repetition.

Hip-Hop and Funk- For Ages 5 and up

This exciting class will explore the wide and diverse spectrum of the culture and dance of Hip Hop and Funk Styles, from the old school to the new. The foundations of Locking, Popping, Top Rock, New Jack Swing, House and more will be explored. This class is great for improving poly-rhythmic movement capabilities, encouraging personal expression and improving body isolations and overall coordination. Students will develop the skills to be able to “freestyle” and become a versatile dancer!

Lyrical - For Ages 12 and up

Lyrical dance is a fusion of ballet with jazz and contemporary dance techniques. This style has its primary basis in ballet, combining the many technical elements of classical ballet with the freedom and airier aspects of jazz, contemporary and modern dance. It is typically considered a sub-category of jazz and/or contemporary dance, the latter itself being an emerging category. Lyrical dance is expressive, simultaneously subtle and dynamic, focused on conveying musicality and emotion through movement. It is a combination of intricate, highly technical, and pedestrian/naturalistic moves. It is commonly set to popular music with vocals as well as rich instrumental portions of a pop song.

Creating Choreography

Dancers learn different methods to creating choreography and how it is prepared in relation to the audience they are gearing it towards, selecting dancers, formations, music etc. Knowing the choreographic process is an important skill for dancers. There will also be a chance to choreograph for upcoming performances.

We do not post our schedule because we want to explore what avenues are best for your dancer together with you. It is important to discuss the best options possible for your dancer and your family. Professional Division

Students are required to commit to the prescribed number of classes for their level during the year. If they are chosen to participate in various performances, their participation is optional.  Past performances have included Disneyland, California Adventure, Universal Studios, The Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Holt Renfrew, Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, The Calgary Zoo, Homes by Avi and the Brentwood Community Garden Party.

Dancers are brought to their highest individual level by registered teachers. Many of these teachers have danced professionally and/or trained with some of the world’s finest companies. The faculty’s vast knowledge and experience is the foundation for excellent training. Be a part of a wondrous journey which encompasses the best in dance training, exhilarating experiences with guest masters and choreographers, along with inspiring performances on stage. The results of this specialized program are truly unique to Calgary.

Dancers who are accepted and adhere to the philosophies, policies and procedures in the Professional Division Program will be eligible to travel with the program. Please note that this trip is completely optional for those dancers in the Professional Division Program.
